Smart meters are advanced energy meters which help manage energy efficiently. Unlike conventional meters, these digital monitors provide real-time monitoring of energy consumption for monitoring and billing purposes. Smart meters are commonly used in most developed countries, to measure electricity, water, and gas usage for both commercial and residential properties.

Smart meters, makes it effortless to calculate energy consumption and cost, by doing away with manual meter readings. The usage is reflected in home digital displays, which provides quick information on the energy consumed and cost. Settings can be configured to calculate the reading on a monthly basis and automatically communicate that information to designated utility providers.

Smart meters are generally connected to an expanded smart grid system, which ease up the gateways of communication. Today, they are replaced by Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), which is an expanded network of energy metering connecting home networking systems like thermostats to smart meters, to local communication connectors and Meter Data Management Systems (MDMS). Utility providers typically use these systems to collect historical data, derive energy consumption patterns to develop energy management models.

Two major types of smart meters are prevailing in the market: Time of Use (ToU) meters, and Interval meters. They differ in terms of purpose and cost. ToU meters are basic models which measure usage at pre-defined blocks of time; these are cost effective too. Interval meters are more advanced as they measure usage at many different blocks of time helping utility providers to charge different rates at peak, off-peak and moderate time periods. The readings are more accurate but come at a higher cost.
